      • 6-10 - 30' lengths of rope
      • 3-5 load rated carabiners, or
      • a suspension ring

      About our instructors:

      Thomas (he/him, fet: untiedbythomas)

Thomas joined Studio Friction and the Denver Kink community in April of 2022 and has been obsessed ever since. A rope top and self suspender, Thomas has a deep love for all things Shibari, whether that be taking every class possible, learning a new harness for suspensions, or compulsively shopping for new rope. He believes no scene is finished until the last bit of rope is removed, putting extra emphasis on connection, body movement, and intimacy. Recently stepping into the world of teaching, he is so excited to give back to the community that has taught him so much and share all of the education he has absorbed along the way.

Within the kink world, Thomas' interests include: grappling/wrestling, D/S dynamics, CNC play, and is willing to try anything at least 4 times. Outside of kink, Thomas can be found playing guitar, reading, training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, playing board games, walking his 2 dogs, and writing code. Thomas identifies as a cis, poly, het, white male and is constantly curious about human experiences different than his own.

      Marilyn (she/her, fet: _Marilyn_)

Marilyn first entered the Denver rope community in 2019. After finishing the partnered curriculum in March 2020 (literally the Wednesday before Denver shut down!), Marilyn began self-tying as a way to maintain her rope skills. She quickly fell in love with the playful, energetic, and dynamic nature of it! She is happy to be back in Denver and to be exploring all that rope has to offer again, whether that's tying others, tying herself, or letting others tie her sometimes too.

Marilyn identifies as a queer, polyamorous, kinky switch. She's passionate about relationship anarchy, arguing the semantics of language, and the value of building connections. She's excited to be engaging with the Denver rope community in a new, bigger way through teaching and curriculum development.

By the end of the Beginner 2 series, students will be able to:

                1. Explain the benefits and drawbacks to each type of single column

                3. Learn appropriate suspension hardware

                5. Tie an effective and sustainable arms-free chest harness
                6. Understand ways to incorporate arms into an arms-free harness
                7. Gain an initial understanding of a 3-rope TK

                Equipment: 4 to 6 - 30' lengths of rope

                Instructors:

                Kathryn/IG: Kathryn.Ties (she/her)

Kathryn has been a member of the Denver rope community since 2021. Initially captivated by Shibari’s blend of beauty and pain, she has fallen in love with the technical depth and artistry rope offers. She began her journey as a bottom, with a fondness for Futomomo inversions. In 2022, Kathryn decided to delve deeper into Shibari by learning to tie. Since then, she has dedicated herself to honing her skills as a rigger through meticulous attention to detail. Kathryn has a love for flowy, sensual, sweet ties with a dash of meanness sprinkled on top for spice.

                Mel/FL: mel_at_dawn (she/her)

Mel entered the Denver kink scene in August 2023, adamant she only had interest in bottoming. That lasted about 1.5 months before she purchased her own rope and dove into tying. She’s a big fan of twisting people into shapes, while collaboratively exploring the individual strengths each person brings to rope. Whether topping or bottoming, her interests include challenging hashira ties, laughter, and power dynamics.

She identifies as a queer, polyamorous, disabled, kinky switch. Others at Studio Friction have taught her so much about the intersection of self-exploration, kink, and bottom empowerment; she’s excited to pass that knowledge forward. Humans contain multitudes and Mel loves spaces that honor and encourage that.

                Studio Friction Curriculum Grants

To minimize the inequities and financial barriers to rope bondage education, and to increase engagement and participation of a diversity of participants, Studio Friction is able to offer one Tuition Grant per 3-course succession of Beginner 1, Beginner 2 and Intermediate 1. This is a 3 course, 3 month series with the goal to educate students from their very first single column knot to their first suspension.

A Wrapped membership - providing discounted access to other Studio Friction events - is included for all grantees. This is a limited opportunity of 6 to 10 grants per year based on Studio Friction curriculum program scheduling availability.

If you would like to apply for a Studio Friction Curriculum Tuition Grant, please read through the Studio Friction Curriculum Course Grant - Qualifications and Application Process. From that page you will find the link to apply.

Studio Friction's newest comedy show is hosted by our very own Chris Wellman. Chris is a kink & sex positive comedian who hosts both the Comedy & Kink and The Slut Down comedy shows in Denver.

The Knotty Show is part stand-up comedy show, part rope demonstration. Colorado's goofiest comedians perform their craft alongside a couple of kinksters doing a suspension. Sometimes the comics roll with it and sometimes the comics get all blushy & bashful. Either way, hilarity ensues!

                    Doors Open @ 730p

This show is 21+, BYOB, and will have donation beer, hard seltzers, and pizza available. Patrons are still welcome to bring their own sodas, water bottles, beer, and wine to enjoy (no hard liquor).

Rope Practicum is a friendly and collaborative space where rope enthusiasts come together to share, learn, and grow in their practice. Whether you’re a top, bottom, switch, or self-tier, this community-driven event offers a chance to ask questions, troubleshoot techniques, exchange skills, and dive into meaningful discussions about rope bondage. Our goal is to create a welcoming environment where everyone—newbies and seasoned practitioners alike—can expand their knowledge and refine their craft through open-source, community-led learning.

Please note, Rope Practicum is not a play space. While playfulness is welcome, this is a space focused on learning and discussion, not on scenes or play. To keep the atmosphere conducive to education, studio lights will remain on, and music will be off.

This isn’t a traditional class, nor do we operate within a teacher-student hierarchy. We encourage everyone to contribute, whether you’re offering your expertise or exploring new ideas. Our inclusive approach means that all are welcome, regardless of experience level or role within rope dynamics.

Examples of What We Can Explore Together:

                          • Asking and answering questions—whether community-wide or personal interests
                          • Reviewing and practicing techniques from recent studio classes or intensives
                          • Troubleshooting knots, variations (like munter hitches, 3rd rope variations), and rope management
                          • Deepening conversations around topics like active bottoming, risk assessment, nerve pathways, consent, negotiation, and more
                          • Workshopping specific ties, positions, or sequences
                          • Exploring “soft skills” like connective rope, ichinawa, or intricate finger/toe ties
                          • Discussing the history and adaptation of Japanese rope bondage practices
                          • Offering and receiving feedback on your ties for improvement

Come with curiosity, and leave with new insights, connections, and skills. Rope Practicum is all about fostering a supportive, interactive community where everyone’s journey is valued!

                              Robb / @Robb_Snow (he/him)

Robb has been involved in Japanese rope bondage as a student, teacher, and performer since 2013. Robb loves both tying and being tied and particularly enjoys the connection and intimacy that can be achieved through rope. Robb's tying style mixes sensuality and sadism, with a focus on creating a shared container to playfully explore vulnerability and desire.

                              Snoh (she/her)

Snoh discovered her passion for rope bottoming in 2022, drawn to its beauty, intimacy, and the profound connections it allows. Her journey in Shibari has been transformative, teaching her more about communication, interpersonal relationships, energy exchange and a deep exploration of one's self. Beyond the ropes, Snoh cherishes the connections she forges with her partners and the kink community. She seeks to share her knowledge and passion through workshops and demonstrations, volunteering, and fostering an environment of exploration.

Thanks to the opportunities provided by Denver Rope Bite and Studio Friction's efforts, he has had some amazing opportunities to learn from presenters around the globe. Pre-Covid he could often be found at parties and events having fun scenes, teaching and occasionally performing. These days he is focusing on play at home but still trying to build community through smaller, more focused, educational opportunities..

BetwixtBlushes is a regular in the Denver scene since 2015. She is an enthusiast of discussion groups, bottoms speaking up (especially in class), and thigh high socks. If you hear giggling, she's often the culprit.

The Next Generation (TNG) Night is back at Studio Friction! A special event for the younger folx between 19 and 35. TNG is great for those new and experienced with rope alike. It’s a safe space to try out rope for the first time while also building community among the next generation. Skill sharing is encouraged from experienced riggers. And of course, non-rope activities are allowed too.

                                      Schedule:

                                      • Doors open @ 7p
                                      • From 7:30-8pm there will be casual instruction on a basic knot and safety.
                                      • Pending the availability of experienced riggers, there may be an opportunity for rope tastings throughout the night.
                                      • Arrive by 8pm to allow our volunteers time to socialize/play too!

TNG is especially good for people new to Studio Friction as it’s one of our few regular monthly events that is open to non-members.

Bring your rope and/or curiosity and come hang out at Studio Friction's TNG Night!

                                              Instructors:

Tight Lines: A kink life drawing event

                                                COST: Sliding scale $10/$15/$20

Please bring your favorite drawing materials; we will be drawing the human form in an array of kinky activities. Obviously, there will be a strong focus on rope, and we will likely start there, but eventually, there will be a range of kinks represented. We will create a relaxed atmosphere to see and draw fun, sexy things.

If you are new to rope or kink, this will be a great low-pressure atmosphere to spend some time watching and drawing some beautiful kink. Models will pose for varying times in various kinds of positions.

If you don't have them, we will provide some basic materials, but certainly, bring your favorite sketchbook/tablet/easel and mark-making supplies.

Switchtext isn’t an art instructor, but he does have an art degree and has spent a lot of time in life drawing classes. He is happy to offer input and suggestions on your work if you would like.

If you are interested in posing and tying for these drawing sessions, reach out to nate@studiofriction.com

This class explores several simple but sadistic floor-based ties designed to cause (consensual) distress with our favorite medium, rope. We'll explore a variety of ties, ranging from subtle discomfort to deep intensity, as well tools, techniques, and conversations to build your perfectly sadistic scene. Whether you’ve just tied your first single column or are a seasoned rigger, these “quick and dirty” ties are just that–quick, simple, and sure to have your bottom sweating in seconds.
Beyond technique, we'll also unpack through guided discussion about what it means to play with pain -- Why do we choose sadomasochism? How do we care for each other during and afterwards? Students are meant to leave the workshop with the tools to play sadistically, responsibly, and
                                                    intentionally.

In March of 2018 Sydona (she/her) found her way into the NYC kink scene and never looked back. Since then, she's immersed herself into honing her rope practice, perhaps obsessively. She currently works full time as a nightlife performer, bondage artist, photographer, creator, and facilitator. In these past several years she's traveled both within the U.S. and internationally for rope opportunities, as a performer, as a student, and more recently as an educator. Previous to 2020, Syd trained and worked as a professional modern and contemporary dancer, a background she takes great pride in. With over thirteen years of experience as a movement artist, next to seven years of dedicated Shibari education, Sydona brings a unique, fluid, and delightfully sadistic perspective to this form.

                                                    Foley she/her

Foley (she/her) is a Brooklyn-born multi-disciplinary artist. When it comes to rope, she’s a bottom-leaning switch with a focus on bottom education. Both her dance and craft backgrounds play important roles in the way she approaches rope on both sides of the slash.

They switch in rope and all things kinky, and are passionate about education. They believe rope is for every body, and are dedicated to adapting rope to fit the needs of the scene and the people in it. Nova loves the tactile, connective element of tying and is thrilled to have a creative practice that facilitates platonic cuddling. They have a particular love for creatively themed ties and mixing rope with other sadistic play.

Nova identifies as a transmasc, polyamorous, kinky switch. Outside of rope they can be found climbing, birdwatching obsessively, and baking for praise.

His favorite thing about rope is how it fosters connection and communication, and its calming effects on distractable neurodivergent minds. T comes from an educator background, and is passionate about generating safe, positive, and inclusive educational experiences for newcomers to the rope scene.

T identifies as queer and gender-nonconforming, and is a rope top. He especially loves to combine the art of rope with his cosplay and photography hobbies. Outside of kink, T is a dog dad and amateur taxidermist.

Negotiation isn’t about getting permission or convincing someone to say yes, it’s about knowing yourself well enough to speak clearly, honestly, and with care. In this interactive education event, we’ll explore how to have conversations that help you listen your needs while staying connected to others.

Together, we’ll break down what meaningful negotiation actually includes: naming desires, sharing intentions, discussing boundaries, and checking in on the feelings of everyone involved. We’ll talk about how to articulate what you want to experience (emotionally, physically, and relationally), how to identify and communicate pain points, and how to stay grounded when conversations feel vulnerable or charged.

We’ll also cover practical tools that support safer, clearer agreements, including:
                                                                                    ● Red/yellow/green light frameworks, safe words, and check-ins
                                                                                    ● Keeping negotiation trauma-informed
                                                                                    ● Talking about limits, expanded conversation on hard and soft yeses
                                                                                    ● How to notice when something shifts mid-experience and how to speak up

This class is designed to help you move away from guessing, people-pleasing, or silence, and toward confident self-advocacy rooted in consent, curiosity, and self-trust. Whether you’re new to negotiation or looking to deepen your skills, you’ll leave with language, structure, and a stronger sense of how to ask for what you want without losing yourself in the process.

                                                                                    Your Instructors:

Robb_Snow (He/Him) has been involved in Japanese rope bondage as a student, teacher, and performer since 2013. Robb loves both tying and being tied and particularly enjoys the connection and intimacy that can be achieved through rope. Robb's tying style mixes sensuality and sadism, with a focus on creating a shared container to playfully explore vulnerability and desire.

Tattooed_N_Nerdy (she/her) is a total sex nerd, both personally and professionally. As an educator and sex therapist, she provides knowledge about kink, sexuality, consensual nonmonogamy, intimacy, desire, and navigating trauma recovery. From the classroom to the therapy room to the conference room to the play space, she is an intersectional and sex-positive provocateur hoping to instigate thoughtful dialogue and dispel shame related to all things kinky and sexy.

TheSwitchBunny (she/her) brings a grounded, consent-forward lens to everything she does. A switch who loves the electric energy of negotiation, she’s known for clear communication, thoughtful boundary-setting, and helping people speak up for what they want. Even in her day-to-day professional life, she's championing informed consent practices and staying risk aware. Kinky, connective, and deeply people-oriented, she is an integral part of Studio Friction’s Incident Response Team (IRT) and believes deeply in education, accountability, and community as foundations for safer, more connected kink spaces

Join us for an afternoon centered on the voices, experiences, and wisdom of rope bottoms. This roundtable is a collaborative space to explore the knowledge, skills, questions, insight, communication, and care that shape the bottoming experience—while building mutual support, shared language, and connection within our community.

This event will be based in community contribution for topics we hope to discuss. Whatever the day and attendance calls for will be our focus. We want the hard questions and weird thoughts. We want to dig into the basics and to expand into abstracts and nuances. Topics such as approaching new tying partners, pain processing, negotiations and risk profiles, emotional empowerment, body image and awareness, preparation and aftercare, and the many small details that help bottoms feel informed, respected, and resourced- bring those.

Expect thoughtful dialogue, shared stories, practical resources, and the quiet magic that happens when people feel safe enough to speak and be heard. We're gathering to hold space for each other in honesty, complexity, and care without turning the space into a venue for personal call-outs or dedicated resolution of individualized situations.

We welcome switches and attentive tops who are willing to listen, learn, and support without taking focus away from bottom experiences. Whether you’re new to rope, deeply experienced, or simply wanting to better understand the bottoming journey, you are welcome here.

This opening forum launches Studio Friction's Consent Education Series with an open invitation to bring your questions, concerns, curiosities, and lived experiences around consent in kink and sex-positive spaces.

Facilitated by a trauma and sex therapist skilled in communication, sex-positivity, and trauma-informed language, this session creates a brave, grounded space for real conversation.

This is not a lecture or a rule-review. It is a collaborative forum to talk honestly about what is working in our community, where consent can get complicated or break down, and what support, clarity, or skills people actually want.

Participants are encouraged to ask the questions they have been holding, name challenges they see or experience, and help shape solutions together. Anonymous participation options will be available.

Your input will directly inform the rest of the Consent Education Series and help the Incident Response Team (IRT) build practical, in-house resources for education, repair, and accountability.

Whether you are new to the community or deeply established, your voice matters. Come curious. Come thoughtful. Come with your hard questions. This town hall sets the tone for a consent culture rooted in communication, agency, and shared responsibility, and starts a series designed to meet the community where it truly is.

And of course, non-rope activities are allowed too.

This class will explore intention, emotional communication, movement, and connection in floor-based rope. Combining rope/partner handling, one-rope work, and positional play, participants will cultivate presence, awareness, and sustainable tying practices.

This class focuses on fundamentals of connection, communication, and fluid body movement. Class topics are suitable for all levels of experience and will cover a variety of drills, games, exercises, and basic forms that reinforce class concepts and provide creative opportunities for exploration.

The focus will be on how we tie and what tying communicates rather than what we tie and how to tie it.

                                                                                                                        Prerequisites:

A simple chest harness can become real torture when breathing in certain positions. The rope is a perfect tool for breath play. The rigger can play with his or her partner’s breathing on different spots: mouth, throat, ribcage, abdomen... After we familiarize ourselves with the precautions to be taken, we’ll experiment with effective ways of obstructing the air column... Breath play is a powerful means of communication in ropes. In this course, we’ll explore the reactions and emotions that breath play can induce on your partner, so that we can use it appropriately in a rope session.

                                                                                                                        Bänana (She/Her)

Bänana, a ten-year bondage enthusiast, found her passion in shibari in 2017, drawn to its raw and authentic nature. As she has always been fascinated by the expression of emotions, shibari, and more specifically semenawa, has opened up a new path of exploration to her. She began to follow Docvale’s teaching in November 2018, later partnering with him to co- manage Atelier Simonet in Paris until summer 2023. Bänana created La Cabäne during winter 2024. Bänana considers that in order to tie well, we must understand each of our technical choices rather than learning the instructions by heart. She gives to her students a solid grounding so they can feel free while tying and put these technical abilities at the service of the relationship with their partners.

Being in ropes is also something to be apprehended. Not that you have to behave in any particular way. On the contrary, every tied-up person has to find the way that pleases him or her. It's also a long journey full of questions and emotions, and it seems important to Bänana that all this is taken into account during her courses.

Bänana's courses are so often highly interactive, with the idea that everyone should have a place to ask questions and express their experiences and feedback in order to grow together in this practice.

We can see a shibari session as a sequence of different steps. The choice of these steps is made as the session progresses, depending on the evolution desired by the rigger in relation to his/her partner. The rigger can for example choose to add ropes, to vary a shape or to create movement and to radically change a position. During this workshop, I would like us to analyze the possibilities we have to make a session evolve, by observing in our practice the moments of immobility and movements. We will attach very different types of sessions in order to find ways of thinking about questions such as: What is at play in the immobility for the person tied up? What is the right moment to decide to change position and in what ways can we choose to make a transition? This workshop is not meant to bring answers but to try to enrich our practice of semenawa with new paths!

                                                                                                                                Things to bring:

                                                                                                                                • A full rope kit (12-14 hanks of 7 or 8m)
                                                                                                                                • Cutting tool

                                                                                                                                Prerequisites:

THIS IS AN ADVANCED INTENSIVE, LEVEL 2. IF YOU ARE UNSURE IF YOUR SKILL LEVEL IS SUITABLE FOR THIS INTENSIVE, PLEASE REACH OUT TO OSOROPES

This advanced course is suitable for riggers who are comfortable tying in bamboo suspension. Having already been tied several times in suspension is necessary for the models. Bänana’s ropes style could be related to semenawa (ropes of torment). You need to be comfortable with this kind of dynamic. Communication being a central element in shibari it is always preferable to come with a partner with whom you already practice in order to allow a good experience. It's important to have already discussed the framework of your practice (desires, intentions, limits, ways of managing consent). Regarding the chest harnesses used, Bänana will tie different ones, but there will never be any obligation. For each exercise, you will be able to choose according to your preferences, as long as the harness can be suspended. If at any point during the workshop you need adaptations, Bänana will be there to support you.

All participants must have a shared understanding of negotiations, consent, and safety. Clarity on boundaries around touch, exposure, and manipulation, and aftercare needs.
